“STEM for Refugees” inspires hundreds of refugee children with STEM fields.
Cairo, August 2023- Hundreds of refugee children enjoyed a new learning journey through STEM fields with “STEM for Refugees” programme implemented and coordinated by Al Alfi Foundation, Baseet, UNHCR Egypt, and the Catholic Relief Services. “STEM for Refugees” is a series of one-day camps where refugee children spend days full of exciting activities to explore STEM fields, spark their interest and curiosity in science and technology, boost their morals, and enhance their skills.
After their arrival from different areas in Cairo and having breakfast, the camp starts with Baseet Puppet Show, featuring fictional characters coming from space to accompany the children on a journey into space and through the solar system. The children get well familiar with the planets and move between them through a Virtual Reality Tour to discover our unique galaxy and its distinctive characteristics.
“Could we live outside the Earth?” students ask. Baseet team of science communicators run some demonstrations and activities contain “Mr. Alien Journey Inside our Human Body” film screening, eye model, heart model, lung model and digestive system model to let students explore the roles of their organs, how they adapt in different environments to understand the importance of staying healthy and protecting their well-being.
Baseet STEM camp introduced a unique edutainment experience for the refugee children. They were divided into rotated groups where they enjoyed a variety of fun interactive STEM project-based learning activities. The children learned how to make electric circuits to create their own projects and played with the slime they had created themselves. The projects aimed at promoting the children’s teamwork, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and enhancing their creativity and imagination.
After having lunch break, the children witnessed Baseet Science Show presented by Baseet world-class science communicators to explore the magic of science and discover the human’s learning journey on earth over the ages, from using fire, to discovering oil and fuel, to finally resorting to clean and solar energy to protect our planet and engage the children with the Climate Action.
Before returning home by the buses provided by Bus14, the children received Baseet educational kits to ensure they continue learning and discovering at their homes and share their knowledge with family and friends. They played and took pictures with Mr. Alien, whom they loved dearly. The camp has also provided a chance for the teachers accompanying the children to discover new ways and techniques to engage students with science and technology in their classes.
